Breakdown by Taylor Sanghyun Lee

This is the penultimate scene of my short film "Layover," starring Young Mazino, which I wrote and directed in my second year at NYU Grad Film. We lit this using the practical lamp that was already in the location, along with two Astera Titan Tubes. We shot it on an Arri Alexa Mini with Zeiss Super Speeds. Fun fact: this was in my own apartment basement, and this basement is also the same location where I shot the party scene that opened the film. Another fun fact: This was the last short film that Young acted in, since several months after we shot this film, BEEF was released, and the rest is history!

Frame by frame

  • Film frame: The light in the scene was motivated by the practical lamp in the background, and the Astera Titan Tubes off-screen helped wrap the light to the actor's face. We could only dress this half of the room since the other half was used for the party scene, so the edges of the frame were the edges of the dressed set. In the color grade, I adjusted the light to be greener since I wanted the grime of his apartment to contrast with the warmth of his parents' house.

  • Film frame: We used a longer lens here (85mm) so that the silhouette of the beer bottle was dirty in the bottom-right of the frame. I love how the light caught the edge of Young Mazino's left eye, which accentuated his emotion here. Gianna Badiali, the cinematographer, did such a great job lighting the mood in this location. In post, I added a very small digital zoom-in, which helped transition from this scene to the final moment of the film.
